The PopKunst Professorship
PopKunst is the latest professorship to be set up at the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts.
For four years, research is being carried out into PopKunst under the direction of Professor Merlijn Twaalfhoven with the help of the writer and musicologist Bas van Putten and an extensive knowledge network.
PopKunst is art that focuses on the public without making any concessions in terms of distinctiveness.
NB: PopKunst is not to be confused with the historical concept of PopArt. PopArt has a completely different meaning: it concerns art that deploys forms, which are appropriated from popular culture.
By researching PopKunst, we intend to discover a great deal more about:
Reaching a new audience
Involving inexperienced participants in innovative art
Liberating art from its fixed boundaries
Personal experiences, written sources and fresh research are being compared, shared, made accessible and applied to both art education and the professional world.
