Musique de Nuit
Friday March 25 2005, Podium Twente and Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Enschede
Location A: Twentse Schouwburg
Reception with presentations of art theory and traditional Dutch board games with the participation of Russian actors. One by one, the audience was invited to follow a route along the dressing rooms set out by words painted on the floor. All along the route there were confrontations with ballerinas; actors performed dressing room acts; between the black curtains a dancer improvised to live music performed by Hans van Koolwijk's bamboo organ and a string ensemble; flute music was played on a Japanese shō; actors played in the gentlemen's club; there was an installation by Pé Okx and a very surprising 3-course supper was held in completely darkness.
Location B: Rijksmuseum Twenthe
While roaming around this beautiful museum, the audience stumbled upon a host of musicians and singers who played short wisps of music according to a tight schedule. Classical music, soundscapes and contemporary compositions came together and loud sounds, reverberating through the hall, were interspersed with moments of intimacy. At regular intervals short performances were given by 3 choirs that took place in the closed-off hall.
Location C: Het Balengebouw
In the bare and dark spaces of this industrial monument – only lit by a few lamps for the singers and candles – the singers of the choir of the National Reisopera stood dispersed around the space and performed Merlijn Twaalfhoven’s composition ‘een Moment’. The audience was treated to a cup of hot chocolate milk and a traditional Dutch syrup wafer.
Location D: Grote kerk
Starting at 23:00, there was a colourful party with a string ensemble, wind players, a girl's choir, Bulgarian singing, a percussion ensemble, film projections and DJs. The audience was asked to remove their shoes and the scenery consisted of piles of cushions, pillows and carpets.
Outside:
A wind ensemble played on the square; there was a bus with the brass band of the First Lovers' Night on it and a loud one-man band played from a small truck.
